This article from Daniel Henninger points up exactly why I think we need school choice of some kind. Yes, it is theoretically possible to fix all of these problems by reforming the public school system, but why? Nobody is arguing against subsidized universal education, so why not open up the field to new ideas and let parents choose which ones are best?

Wow. A fascinating and occasionally hilarious trip through Baghdad with Boris Johnson. He highlights some of the challenges facing the reconstruction, but in the end concludes it's worth the effort.

James Taranto has an interesting perspective on Sen. Santorum's stupid anti-gay remarks. He presents a utilitarian case why polygamy should be illegal, while same-sex unions should be legal, but also makes a case for limiting homosexual couples to a same-sex "civil union", rather than allowing gay marriage. I agree with him--it's not about being right, it's about being effective. The moderate solution is the right solution in this case, because the inevitable backlash wouldn't be bearable. As he says--look at the example of abortion.

Ha. Comical Ali can't seem to get himself arrested. He's currently living in Baghdad with his maiden aunt and her 12 cats.*

Andrew Sullivan thinks he's found an honest-to-gosh case of infringement of free speech against a protestor. I'd like to know more about this--if it's not just the NYT blowing smoke, it's a real problem.

Well, since Islamist terrorists and secular Ba'athists can't possibly work together because of their religious differences, this obviously didn't happen.
